Goldsby, Thomas J..
Interest is high in Argentina as an emerging economic power in the Americas. This paper analyzes issues pertinent to the relative advantages and disadvantages of transportation and logistics systems between the United States and Argentina in the context of distribution to significant global markets. Designed as a tool for agribusiness students and prospective investment and trade partners, it provides a side-by-side analysis of U.S. and Argentine rail, motor, and water transportation systems. Also from a comparative perspective, it examines grain storage capacities and systems.

Analysis on Financing Status of Infrastructure in Agricultural High-tech Demonstration Zone of Yangling City and Application of PPP Mode AgEcon
Jian-ling, L.V.; Chao, G.E..
Financing mode of municipal public utilities in agricultural High-tech Demonstration Zone of Yangling City was mainly divided into five kinds, including financial financing mode, debt financing mode, enterprise accumulation mode, business resources mode, foreign direct investment and private capital financing mode. Due to the single investment subject, narrow financing channel, monopoly management and ineffectiveness of capital utilization in infrastructure financing, PPP mode based on the co-operative financing of public sector and private enterprises was put forward. The financing applications of PPP mode in Yangling Demonstration Zone were discussed either. However, attentions should be paid to establish a benign partnership between government and...

Augmented Gravity Model: An Empirical Application to Mercosur-European Union Trade Flows AgEcon
Martinez-Zarzoso, Inmaculada; Nowak-Lehmann, Felicitas.
This paper applies the gravity trade model to assess Mercosur-European Union trade, and trade potential following the agreements reached recently between both trade blocs. The model is tested for a sample of 20 countries, the four formal members of Mercosur plus Chile and the fifteen members of the European Union. A panel data analysis is used to disentangle the time invariant country-specific effects and to capture the relationships between the relevant variables over time. We find that the fixed effect model is to be preferred to the random effects gravity model. Furthermore, a number of variables, namely, infrastructure, income differences and exchange rates added to the standard gravity equation, are found to be important determinants of bilateral...

AZ INFRASTRUKTÚRA ÉS A MEZŐGAZDASÁG AgEcon
Abonyi-Palotas, Jolan.
Ezen sokat lendíthet a speciális infrastruktúra átgondolt, dinamikus fejlesztése. - The internal and external circumstances, production, processing and the economic sales environment have all...

BRAZIL: THE FUTURE OF MODERN AGRICULTURE? AgEcon
Matthey, Holger; Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Fuller, Frank H..
In an attempt to understand better Brazil'’s future role in agricultural markets, the authors of this report traveled to Brazil on a fact-finding mission in September 2003. The goal was to get a first-hand impression of Brazil’'s agricultural sector and especially its future potential. In this report we provide a general description of crop and livestock production, government policies, public and private cooperation, and transportation and biotechnology issues. The most striking observations made during our time in Brazil was the universal sense of optimism expressed by producers, government officials, agronomists, and market analysts about the future growth of Brazilian agricultural production. Does that mean Brazil, as one person suggested, is the...

Climate's Long-term Impact on New Zealand Infrastructure (CLINZI) - A Case Study of Hamilton City, New Zealand AgEcon
Jollands, Nigel; Ruth, Matthias; Bernier, C.; Golubiewski, N..
Infrastructure systems and services (ISS) are vulnerable to changes in climate. This paper reports on a study of the impact of gradual climate changes on ISS in Hamilton City, New Zealand. This study is unique in that it is the first of its kind to be applied to New Zealand ISS. This study also considers a broader range of ISS than most other climate change studies recently conducted. Using historical climate data and four climate change scenarios, we modelled the impact of climate change on water supply and quality, transport, energy demand, public health and air quality. Our analysis reveals that many of Hamilton City's infrastructure sectors demonstrated greater responsiveness to population changes than changes in gradual climate change. Any...

COMÉRCIO INTERESTADUAL E INFRA-ESTRUTURA NO BRASIL: UMA ANÁLISE DO RELACIONAMENTO NO BRASIL AgEcon

Community values for historic heritage preservation in Australia - — A choice modeling application (PowerPoint Presentation) AgEcon
van Bueren, Martin.
Over the past 220 years since European settlement, Australia has amassed a diverse array of historic heritage places. Currently there are approximately 200,000 places listed on statutory heritage lists across the nation. Owing to the public-good nature of heritage, community values for the preservation of historic places (both quality and quantity dimensions) is not readily observable from market transactions. Yet this information is critical for efficient management of heritage. This study uses a survey technique (Choice Modelling) to estimate value estimates. To the author’'s knowledge, it is the first study to use this approach to understand community preferences for alternative protection outcomes at a national level — as opposed to site specific...

Conservation and Unscripted Development: Proximity to Park Associated with Development and Financial Diversity Ecology and Society
Baird, Timothy D.; Virginia Tech; tbaird@vt.edu.
Decades of research on the social dynamics of biodiversity conservation has shown that parks and protected areas have added hardship to rural communities throughout much of the developing world. Nonetheless, some recent studies have found evidence of poverty alleviation near protected areas. To build on these conflicting accounts, I use a comparative, mixed-methods design to examine opportunistic, unplanned, i.e., unscripted, development in indigenous communities near Tarangire National Park (TNP) in northern Tanzania. I ask the questions: (1) How is proximity to TNP related to community-level infrastructural development? (2) How has the process of development changed over time? and (3) How is proximity to TNP related to infrastructure-related social...

Decision Support System for Evaluating Rural Water Supply Infrastructure Scenarios AgEcon
Stoecker, Arthur L.; Sanders, Dee Ann; Whitacre, Brian E..
This paper seeks to develop a methodology that will be useful for rural water districts in assessing the future of their water systems infrastructure. In particular, the use of free water simulation software and publicly available data on population, roads, and terrain present rural water systems with the opportunity to analyze their existing distribution system and forecast where problems are likely to occur. This methodology will allow various alternatives (such as consolidation with a neighboring system, or pipe upgrades) to be evaluated and the costs of implementing these alternatives to be explored. Finally, different avenues for funding the associated costs can be summarized and presented to the community, including the steps needed to apply for...

Estimating the impact of transport efficiency on trade costs: Evidence from Chinese agricultural traders AgEcon
Li, Zhigang; Yu, Xiaohua; Zeng, Yinchu.
Using a unique survey data on agricultural traders in China in 2004, this study provides direct evidence on significance of interregional transport costs and their key determinants. Our major findings are as follows: (1) the trade barriers within China are dominated by transport-related costs but not artificial barriers, approximated by tolls and fines; (2) Labor and fuels costs are the most significant component of transport costs; (3) road quality is very important for transportation efficiency. Our results indicate that if increasing transport speed by 1 km per hour now, the fuel costs and total direct transportation costs for Chinese traders would reduce by 1.3% and 0.7% respectively.

Grower representation and its impact on the governance structure of the Australian Grains Industry AgEcon
Farrell, Terence C..
The Australian wheat industry has changed considerably in structure and governance during the past 15 years. The most important changes have been the deregulation of the domestic market and privitisation of the former Australian Wheat Board into AWB Limited. Through these changes growers have become shareholders in the various companies. Governance of the monopolistic relationship between AWB Limited and AWB International by the Federal Minister of Agriculture and the Grains Council of Australia through the Wheat Export Authority has proved ineffective. Hence a national organisation that represents shareholders is recommended to increase grower governance of the supply chain and marketing of wheat.

Infrastructure in developing countries: An overview of some economic issues AgEcon
Dethier, Jean-Jacques; Moore, Alexander.
This paper surveys the main issues and controversies in the economic literature on infrastructure in developing countries. Section I reviews the evidence on the role of infrastructure in promoting economic growth. It is argued that, although infrastructure may be more important for growth than other types of capital, the exact size and form of its effect is less clear than is often assumed. Section II looks at the issue of infrastructure “needs”, estimates of which are pervasive in both the academic and policy literature. It is argued that the preoccupation with such estimates is largely misplaced. More crucial is to develop systems of infrastructure enabling competition through an appropriate market structure. Therefore, section III reviews the economic...
